New This Week:

Hello from your friends at Zen Monkey Studios! We wanted to take a minute to answer some of the questions from social media. If you are curious about anything at all, please find us online through our social links below, and we'll be sure to respond in a future letter.

What's the story behind the name "Zen Monkey Studios?"

Josh:  "I was working on a comic series that featured a monkey loosely based off of Wukong, the Monkey King. Around that time, we were also thinking of starting a small family business, and wanted to incorporate a Monkey as part of the logo and mascot aesthetic, after having fun writing about Wukong.

Originally, I looked at "Laughing Monkey," or "Laughing Monkey Studios," but they were already being used by art studios. Zen Monkey Studios, was not being used for anything similar to what we were working on, and went with it!"

How did you get your first license?

Josh: "I did an unorthodox method. I cold called and e-mailed. The first one that responded positively was The Jim Henson Company. They tossed a number at us, and we thought nothing of the price, and agreed. They were surprised because I think the number was supposed to scare us off.

In retrospect, it was a bad financial deal, but it allowed us to build experience in the licensing world, which led to more recognized, and relevant, properties, than Fraggle Rock!"

What's your advice to anyone who wants to make a career in art?

Josh: "There's no shame in moonlighting."
